Higher Rankings Means More Traffic and More Sales
Search Engine Optimization or SEO is not difficult. You are simply giving the search engines clues as to what your page is about. The search engine then refers to its many databases and ranks your page accordingly, while taking a number of other factors into account.
There are two kinds of SEO: On-Site and Off-Site and below are the basic ways you can build your ranking.
On-site SEO refers to anything you do on your site and includes:
- Use of keywords in text, descriptions of videos and picture titles
- Links and anchor text containing keywords
As the name suggests, this is anything you do on other sites to bring traffic to your site such as
- Articles submitted to article directories
- Guest posts
- Links included when commenting on other people’s blogs
- Links to your site from social media sites you use
We can’t stress enough how important keyword research is and it also ties in with understanding your market. It will take time to select the right keywords to use. If you are dealing with a product that thousands of others are promoting online, your site must stand out, and that means thinking outside the box.
If you understand your market’s needs, there are words and phrases that someone searching for your product or service will use. If you only have one website the Google Keyword tool is perfectly adequate. It will tell you how many searches were performed using a particular keyword and rank that word or phrase for competition, and it will also offer suggestions.
If you write an article for your site it may rank for multiple keywords. Say for example you sell dog houses. You could mention the word kennel a few times which means the same, and using the phrases large dog house and small doghouse will also get you ranked for those terms.
Every time you write an article, a description for a video, name a picture, add a link, write a title or subtitle, think keywords and incorporate them so they make sense. You are primarily writing for your visitor not the search engines!
Anchor text includes words that are clickable which take a visitor through to another site, or an internal link that takes them through to another piece of content on your site. Incorporate keywords in those links, not just “Click Here”. The search engines are looking to see the relevance of your link. In the example above you might want to link to a site about Chihuahuas because you’re marketing small dog houses. Your link could be something like “Find out why a top breeder uses our small dog houses for his Chihuahuas”.
Links and Backlinks
Leaving backlinks containing anchor text with keywords on other RELEVANT sites will help you rank for that specific term of phrase. If the Top Breeder agrees to reciprocate by linking to your site, he could add a term like “Find out where you can buy the best small dog houses here.” And of course that link is clickable and takes his visitor through to your site.
Why Rank is Important
How many times have you clicked through to, say, page 16 when you’ve searched for something online? Probably never. That’s why keyword research and backlink building is so important. Theoretically the sites on page 1 of the search engine page results (SERPS) make the lion’s share of the money because of their visibility. They got there through a combination of keywords, number of backlinks, traffic volume and some other factors.
You would never be able to rank high for the word dog, which gets 37 million searches each month in the US alone. If you’re selling dog houses you would be better writing about “The Best Doghouse for your Family Watch Dog” – the term family watch dog gets 40,500 searches a month and is in the “low competition” category. Check it out. There isn’t a relevant site on the subject on page 1 of the SERPS, so that would be a great opportunity to get good ranking.
Online SEO starts with careful keyword selection after thorough research. It’s better to spend an hour researching than writing an article that may never rank! When you’ve found your keywords, write a high quality and informative article that people will want to read and other sites will want to link to. You can forget about the search engines at this point, you’ve included all the clues they need.
