What Makes A Good Leader
Attributes of a Leader
The first keyword that I want to discuss today is “leaders“. Who do you think is a leader? Can you define the core attributes and personality traits of a leader? In order to succeed in any aspect of your life be it personal or professional or in your current focus of making it big in MLM (industry common term for multi-level marketing), you must be a leader and once you understand the core traits of leadership, begin to relate them to your profile and make necessary adjustments to develop those traits, you will see a marked difference in the quality of your life from where you are today to what you will become tomorrow.
Leader Lead Yourself
First of all competent leaders are masters of leading themselves – not leading a group of people, not leading an organization or a team – leading themselves. Well, what does that mean? In the answer to that question lies the secret sauce for all successful leaders without exception. If you cannot lead yourself, you can forget even that pipe dream of leading an organization and your success, if any, in network marketing will be limited to happenstance. Every leader makes a commitment and come hell or high water they will keep that commitment. They survive by a simple motto “My word is my bond. When I say something, I do it.” No procrastination, no pushing it off for later, no re-prioritizing and re-shuffling the to-do list. Good leaders are always committed to any project they embark on – the rudder of their ship is steadfast. Since good leaders always know where they are going without any doubt in their mind, they automatically attract a feeling of trust and faith in their own abilities and attract others to follow. Would you follow someone who changes direction like folks change shirts? So when you make a commitment – keep it and that is the most important trait of a leader. Become the Mr. or Ms. Dependable and followers will be clinging on to your coat tails wherever you go.
Leaders Never Stop Learning
Secondly, good leaders are always avid learners – you’ll find them reading some literature, watching some educational videos, listening to educational audios, attending educational seminars, all for one goal – to augments their skills. They are hungry to learn more and never have that “I know it” attitude. You’ll never find them say “I get it” – they will say “I’m getting it” – huge difference in attitude. In that hunger for knowledge lies the path for improvement and embellishment in whatever project they are engaged on at the moment of those that they will take up in the future. Remain teachable and know that you don’t know it all – this open-mindedness to learn and implement holds the master-key to your success.
Leaders Are In Charge
In the words of General George Patton – the most accomplished combat general in the history of the United States, “A commander must command.” Seems very simple, but in that simplicity lies a profound message. A leader does nothing else but lead. That leader is the person in charge and whether he or she is leading themselves or a team, there must be no ambiguity on who’s in charge. The leader is always taking personal accountability and responsibility all for actions taken. There is never a finger-pointing to any person, event or circumstance that is outside of his or her self. The leader is always at cause and never at effect. The leader creates the path after quickly considering the pros and cons – there is always a feeling in the gut that guides all decisions and actions made by the leader. When the attitude is right, the facts don’t count because what a follower thinks of as facts, are actually people’s opinions – which have no significance for a leader. So if you want to be a leader, be at cause, take responsibility and accountability. Be on the frontline, be visible, be approachable to whoever it is that you are leading and half your job is done.
Leader Where Is Your Charisma
A leader has a magnetic personality – not that somber, walking in the clouds kind of demeanor but a personality that attracts people like bees. When such a person walks into a room full of people, you will find the crowd gravitating towards that person as if by some secret subliminal command. Excellent Interpersonal skills, effective mannerisms of communication, respect for others opinions, the ability to get a point across emphatically without sounding high-handed, a carriage that exudes inner confidence, a stance and gait that portrays authority are all components of such a magnetic personality. A leader never loses his or her composure, not matter how negative the situation is. Since a leader is responsible and accountable for every outcome, he or she knows that just like they have created or contributed to that negative situation, they can also create and contribute to a situation that will work out in their favor in the end. Roadblocks are never the end of the road for leaders, just opportunities, to stop, reassess, adjust and resume on the course they had set out for in the beginning. Detours are acceptable, but the destination always remains the same. Leaders laugh in the face of adversity and savor the taste of success – this unwavering feeling good attitude is infectious and spreads across the organization that they lead. That is a TEAM where Together Everyone Achieves More.
Leaders Recognize Accomplishments
Leaders reward themselves when the occasion calls for it and never miss an opportunity to commend and reward any member in the organization who deserves recognition or accolade. This shows that the leader cares and is attentive to the deliverables of every member in the team. The power of recognition has been talked about in many circles and the leader strongly subscribes to recognition when the circumstances are appropriate. Now let me ask you this – in order to build a multi-level marketing organization and begin to market like millionaires how many of these basic leadership traits do you have? Make an honest self-evaluation and come up with a score. Which areas do you need to focus on that would make you that magnetic leader that everyone yearns to be but only a few actually become?
