Most of us have a website with one aim in mind: to make a few bucks! When you have found your chosen niche, provided excellent content, and designed the site in a pleasing and navigable way, you’ve done the easy part. You can’t sit back now, and expect a flurry of orders.
If you have optimized your site so it will attract organic searches and have built links, you have to find out if that optimization is actually working! How do you know if its working?
Follow the five steps below:
1. Conversion rate
This is the number of visitors to the site, divided by the number of visitors that complete a desired action. That could be filling in an opt-in form, downloading a coupon, making a payment or clicking on an ad and purchasing. It is the most important evaluation and will tell you a lot about your visitors and your website. You can track this conversion process easily through Google Analytics.

2. Site traffic
Traffic is all-important to your profits. No traffic=no money. Once your site has been indexed by the major search engines, keep an eye on your traffic stats. It is essential that you keep getting links to your site. Links are one of the major things Google looks at. A link (or backlink) from another site that is related to your business, is in Google’s eyes, a vote of confidence.
With few visitors you will get even less sales, so SEO is a vital part of having a profitable website. It is also the hardest and most tedious part. You should consider promoting your website via every means possible – in the signature at the foot of your emails and on all business stationery.
Google Analytics tracks site visits and page views, a steady upwards curve of the number of daily visitors to your site means you are doing something right. Consider page views too, if there are pages that are not getting views, try a linking campaign to them or changing things around.
3. Number and quality of links
Links and the quality of those links is how Google attaches relative importance to your site. Everyone is aiming at Page One of the search engine results page (SERP),- that’s where the money is. Most people don’t look past page two anyway, because they have already found what they were looking for. Keep adding relevant content, use social media and get good backlinks wherever you can
You can track links by downloading a free service from Majestic-SEO, it resides on a useful toolbar. It also tells you the number of Yahoo links you have, your Page Rank, and whether your site has been indexed by Google.
4. To Evaluate your SEO Progress
You need to keep an eye on how your site ranks in Google and other search engines. Your aim, remember, is to be on Page One and watching those indices is a measure of how well you are doing, and how wisely you have chosen your keywords. It also tells you how you are doing with the Yahoo! And Microsoft Bing search engines. 5. Bounce rate
Bounce rate is also covered in the Alexa stats if you have downloaded that toolbar. The amount of time spent on your website is shown, and it can be scary! Sometimes it comes out to just a couple of seconds. But that information alone can tell you something – your content is not interesting or useful to those visitors. It’s an easy fix, write better content or make your pages more interesting.
You can also use Google Analytics if you don’t want to be cluttered up with too many toolbars. If you are alarmed by your bounce rate, check your landing page’s headlines and rework them, and make sure you are using your targeted keywords in your <H1>header; it’s one of the first places Google spiders look.
Update, revise and rework until you get results you are happy with. Remember, more visitors = better conversion = larger profits.
