How To Choose The Perfect Domain Name

Choosing a domain name can be simple or extremely difficult, it all depends what you are looking for. Remember, your domain name is a very important part of your branding and should be chosen with that in mind. It should stand out on a list of websites and be instantly recognizable. If Mark Zuckerberg had called Facebook Asiteforallmyfriends673.mobi, I doubt it would have had the impact it has had today and Mark would have had to get a real job! Just as in face-to-face marketing, your website must reflect your company and what you are all about. Don’t call your site Dog.com if it is all about cats!

Your Domain name is your Brand

Your domain name does influence your click-through rate (CTR) and can seriously impact the way Google and other search engine spiders look at you. Spiders love relevant domain names.

All the best domain names are not already taken! If you have a unique name for your business then you should be able to find a relevant domain name easily. Yahoo and Google are prime examples.

It is true that Google preferred the extension .com, followed by .net and .org, in that order.  Now that algorithm has changed, the folks at Google know that there are one hundred million websites out there and growing, and new extensions are created regularly. Most people automatically think of .com first, especially if they have been using the internet since its beginning, but younger people are not so used to it. If you can’t get the name you really want, a registrar such as Go Daddy will always suggest similar names that are available. Very often even if the .com name is taken, you can get .us, (described as the all-American domain extension) .me, .info (information), or .biz (business).  There are still plenty of choices.

Don’t forget you can always use a hyphen, like Face-Book.com, (it’s already taken for obvious reasons!)

If you decide on another extension, always check if there is a website on the .com name you wanted, and see what it is about. You don’t want to send traffic meant for you to a competitor’s site. If all the extensions are available, consider taking the main extensions for yourself. They are cheap to register and it will prevent someone from trying to muscle in on your business.

The shorter the name the better. Millions of people on the internet can’t spell or type properly, so keep it as simple as possible. If you have a freestanding WordPress blog, try to get yourdomainnameblog.com at the same time, to keep your branding consistent.

Another great post Gabriele. When doing any kind of SEO your domain name is CRITICAL if you want to beat out other people that are going for the same keywords. In fact, it is the first thing Google looks at to see which site is the most relevant. It’s definitely important to know which domain names are good and which aren’t.
